This is to 31 days of halloween! In October I shot this by chance. I enjoy the history of the Roman Empire. I enjoy Hellenistic cultures too. Caesar is a legend for Alesia, he secured a Gaulic redoubt, in a struggle with Vercingetorix. He looked upon himself as a Roman Alexander.

  • I have a good knowledge of Roman history and I read Latin so there is really no need to point out the meanings of words to me. I dont really want to get into an internet debate about this. The reasons why Caesar was assassinated are rather complicated - far more complex than Plutarch (and hence Shakespeare) made out and too complicated to discuss on Youtube. I think we are in agreement anyway. My point was a simple one - Julius Caesar was never emperor.

  • @mikelheron20 No problem.

  • Hard to take a programme seriously that refers to Caesar as "emperor".

  • @mikelheron20 He was what ever he wanted to be.

  • @canary11141. What a stupid remark.

  • @mikelheron20 Go home & get your shoeshine box, Tommy.

  • @mikelheron20 We get the word emperor FROM the Romans "Imperator" - which is what the Romans would have been calling him. The term "king" or regis is what the Romans hated.Ceasar was wary of calling himself king, no doubt.

But "dictator for LIFE" which is what Ceasar was, was to all intents and purposes, the supreme ruler.

Why do you think he was assassinated ?

  • @PhilK112 I didnt miss the point at all - you did. Ever since Brutus (different Brutus)expelled the last King from Rome, the Romans were rather touchy about monarchy. Caesars desire to make himself Emperor was ultimately what got him killed. Referring to him as "Emperor" - regardless of the powers he enjoyed - is plain wrong. You may consider it a trivial difference - the Romans did not.

  • @mikelheron20 You miss the point - no, he was not OFFICIALLY emperor, but was in virtually every way. His word was law, he could hire and fire senators, etc etc etc

He had all the powers that Octavian got next - as emperor.

  • @PhilK112 He was not an emperor, There was a big difference between Dictator for Life (the highest office he achieved) and Emperor. The difference was important enough to bring about his assassination.

  • @mikelheron20 He was "dictator" and "imperator" to all intents and purposes he WAS emperor.
