it was raising hell with engine knock we spent 35.00 on bearings and oil and 1 1/2 hours had it going. These cars are notorious for this at least with this motor now he just has to get rid of it!
---------Here goes what we did----------------
1-put on ramps or jackstands
2-drain oil and remove oil filter
3-remove the brace connecting the trans to the oil pan(you can't miss it takes a 15mm socket)
4-remove the one a/c bolt that goes through the brkt and connects to the oil pan
5-remove the 2 10mm bolts going through the timing cover to the oil pan located beside harmonic balancer these can be a headache with the balancer on but you can do it
6-remove the oil pna bolts and drop pan
7-remove the oil pump pick-up tube
8-remove the main girdle
9-replacing the rod bearings go through and wiggle each one find the worse one and remove the cap if this is your worse one check it real good to make sure it is worth a shot at replacing. If the worse one isn't that bad it's worth a shot ate replacing them.
10-when replacing the rod bearings do the one at a time and turn the engine each time to ensure the bearing isn't to tight. Remember keyway to keyway on the cap and rod
11-torque specs i believe is 15flbs and then a 1/4 turn it's been a while so you might to double check this.
12. if your not sure of bearing size you can look on the backside of the old bearing it will say STD which means standard or .010 and so on
13.If any of the crank journals look bad you can clean them up with emory cloth
14.THIS IS NOT A FOR SURE FIX BUT FOR 50.00 AND AN AFTERNOON IT'S WORTH A SHOT AND WE GOT lUCKY.

  • Saved a cars life and let it go! Did it at any time develop any kind of knock after changing the rod bearings until it got REPO'd? I'm debating on doing this to my Nissan :)

  • @TX97SR20DET what kind of nissan, either way if you get in there and you see something that you are not sure will survive fix it and let it go. You just have to see how bad the damage is and debate it if it seems secure than keep it if not at least rig it and trade it. Your nissan is probably different, these cars develope this no matter what you do. I'll check your channel now for more info.

  • well theirs your problem right their, you use Pennzoil that is shit oil and bad for engines it gums up yore lifters and everything else ive worked on cars of 3 years and is a college student in automotive

  • @furryone66 "and is a college student "are you sure you passed grammer either way it hasn't even had pennzoil in it until this and that's not the issue the issue these engines are garbage there was no sludge or gummed up oil in this engine. So if you haven't learned yet what makes oil break down in college it's not the type of oil, it is heat and poor circulation of the oil tHAT causes heat and combustion gasses getting into the oil that breaks it down it has nothing to do with the type of oil

  • It's no surprise the engine bearings held up for the demostration. The knocking sound comes from rod journals that have been slamming against the crakshaft. due to worn bearings. Sometimes scoring the crankshaft but in every case the rod is battered out of round.. These engines parts are damaged ruining the new bearing in short order.. The real culprit. is lack of Oil. Several possible causes Ususally poor owner maintenence. / mechanical failure/ oil types/ Mileage.

    I have a knock noise in my GMC 1998-99 Yukon since last year(2010)

  • I have a astro van 350k miles and it has a low knock I got the pan off now. No play in rods that I can tell but I'm still hoping to pull the caps and check them may be something else will see.

  • did you replace all of the bearings or just the damaged ones and i saw you didn't take the motor out. to do the job i am assuming that's not needed, that's kind of how i am doing with one of my trucks too at the moment. i don't mean to sound stupid with these questions but this is something i have never done before, it's an older truck so i don't want to sink a whoole lot of anything in it just get it going again as cheap as possible.

  • @downinaholega You're exactly right. I'd say over 3/4 of Intrepids I've ever seen or heard of have been smoking like crazy or blown up... These engines are junk (no offense, but the results speak for themself). As for oil, I've always used Castrol GTX. I've used it since day one in my 1990 Z24 Cavalier (278,000 miles on original engine when I sold it), my 1988 Nissan V6 pickup (301,000 miles on it now) and my 1997 Z24 (172,000 miles). Quaker State is the only oil I've heard of that "gums up"

  • ive seen some stupid shit on here of people fixing cars and blowing them up on purpose BUT THESE TWO MEN ARE AWESOME!!!!! they really fixed it to fix it and not to tear it up LETS GIVE THEM A BIG ROUND OF APPLAUSE great video i did this to my 1979 chevy 350 that got antifreeze in the oil and wore the bearings down to copper used emery like yall did and put new bearings 10,000 miles later still running great i use castrol syntec and lucas oil stabilizer
