Ducted Fan Technology was new in those days.
This video shows how well they worked.

This is a scratch-built P-80 Shooting star with a Rossi 90 engine running on 20% Nitro and a Byrojet ducted fan from Byron Originals.

This plane is hanging in my garage and is flyable.
All I need is a 3 man working crew to fly it.

  • wow I didnt knew that socks can be strached out till they reached your armpits...

  • Nice blast from the past... But Dave can you remember the old jet engine? What i'm talking about was a small canister you mounted to the underside of a balsa model. lite the fuse and launched it. the fuel was a solid pellet about the diameter of a nickle....That went inside the canister....., .

  • SKILLS!

  • love da shorts!

  • How much time of autonomy had it have?

  • buenas,, he gustado mucho del model, y pricipal su sistema de motorizacion, quisera saber si se pode encuetrar este motor en concreto,, en las tiendas de rc... gracias!!!

  • wow the 80's sure had funny cloths!!Nice shorts Dave!

  • Great to see 1980's technology again. I used to fly a DF Mirage F1 built by my dad using a webra speed 40 - but it was very underpowered and a real dog to keep in the air. I still have an un-flown Aero L39 DF that he built, but it has been left behind by the onset of turbines which would set fire to the ply ducting in a second.

Don't know why so many comments worried about the flame out - when I flew r/c we used to fly until the fuel ran out and then land, no sweat, (just a few prayers instead)

  • Wow that was great!
