The Alice programming language and environment have been used successfully to teach entry level students the fundamental concepts behind object oriented programming. Alice does this through the use of three dimensional (3D) graphics and a drag and drop user interface, which makes for an intuitive approach that limits syntax errors on the part of the novice computer programmer.
While the basic functionality of Alice works well for producing three dimensional animated movies for beginning students, more advanced students like to push the bounds of the software in order to achieve a greater level of functionality from the environment.
A particular challenge with Alice is to produce two dimensional animations such as those made famous by the British comedy troupe, Monty Python. In this project, the students animated a traditional Korean folk tale by extending the Alice platform to allow for two dimensional animations.
