I've heard the theories that the letter here is written by Vivi, but I don't really buy it. It doesn't sound like him at all, and it *does* sound quite a bit like Dagger, so I'm more inclined to think it's just her.
There's also the theory that Vivi is already dead by the ending here, but I'm not sure I buy that either. If they were going to kill off Vivi, I'd like to think the ending would focus more on that. Just having him die sort of in the background without any acknowledgement from any of the other characters is a really shitty way to kill off my favorite character in the game, imo.
It's kind of weird either way, though. If he's not dead, why isn't he in the ending at all? And if he is dead, why would they do it so subtly? I like the Zidane and Dagger relationship, but if they were gonna kill off Vivi, then fuck Zidane and Dagger. Vivi's death should have been the focus of the whole ending. It might make it slightly better if the letter really was from Vivi, but again a) it doesn't sound like him and b) if it was from him, they should have just said so at the end, instead of leaving it up to speculation.
So I prefer to think Vivi's alive. It's harder to enjoy the ending otherwise. Not because Vivi dying would be so bad, but because the *way* he'd have died (kind of in the background), would just piss me off.

The monologue at the end of the game does cause a lot of speculation, however, despite our version of the game not sounding like Vivi speaking, in the original Japanese version of the game for the monologue, it uses certain dialogue speech patterns and pronouns that only Vivi had used the entire game.
Our version it is subtle on Vivi's death, however the Japanese version is rather more explicit.
