In the 1960 movie Psycho, the notion of a controlling mother is central to the success of the film. Marion Crane's mother is introduced early in the film, as an influential figure even after death, when Sam and Marian are in the hotel room. The office secretary, Caroline (Patricia Hitchcock), intimates shortly afterward that her mother has called to check up on her. Norman Bates' mother is cast as an overbearing figure, leading to Norman's famous quote, "A boys best friend is his mother."

You should have included the bit where the co-worker talks about the tranquilizers she got from her mother's doctor on the day of her wedding.
