The 12th street rag was very popular in the late Ragtime and early Dance band era. I can only guess that it was already over played by 1920 and Im guessing you didnt know how to play it then you werent in the business of music making. Now often times many piano player play this piece too fast. Im a firm believer that is its too fast to sing the lyrics then its being played too fast. Here it a perfectly played version of this classic piece with a light jaunty rhythm.
Theres even a controversy over who composed or wrote down the strain first. Scott Joplin himself accused Euday Bowman of Plagiarism. Anyone thats even played the 12th Street rag and Scott Joplins Peacherine Rag will notice the same use of harmonies and notes in both pieces. Section A from The Peacherine rag is practically the same as section B of the 12th street. But unfortunately the 12th street would become better known as it was abated to the general repertoire of the burgeoning Fox Trot sound.

Excellent. Thank you for putting this up. I've always loved this song, along with a cousin of mine. My family have a Victrola (or something like it) of some sort and this record was the most played one of all the 78s.
