This is a clip from the documentary "The Last BIG Field Day" by KN4AQ. Well known contest operator Frank Donovan W3LPL shows how he makes nearly 2000 contacts on 20 meter phone at Field Day. The documentary is available on DVD at www.ARVideoNews.com
@comint430 The script says "If you want to make 2000 or more contacts on 20 meter phone at your Field Day station, this is a priceless education." And that's exactly what Frank does. No promises made about capability or adverse conditions. I agree that the example is neither textbook nor flawless. It is, however, effective. Kids, don't try this at home (unless you want to make 2000 or more contacts at your Field Day station).
This is not the educational spectacular it is played up to be. He is not using proper phonetics and is not acknowledging some calls. If all you are interested in for field day is to "run" calls that is your perogative. If you want to teach new operators how to handle calls and demonstrate the capability of amateur radio in the field or under adverse conditions this is not how to do it.
I love the foot switch in the grass picture. Nobody gets more 20 meter QSOs in field day thank Frank!
