You should try adding subtle differences to the hits using the filters or velocity- there is greater scope to add melody to the beat that way- even better chop up some old breaks and get the full drum kit with an authentic sound.

You could add variety to your performances by bringing tracks in and out live once you have the layers in place- for instance stick the snare and kick on different tracks etc

I think you should try using some of the tools built into the mpc- why not experiment with velocity, attack, decay and filters using the Qlink or the 16 level on the pads?

Why not use the effects like bit grunger and phase shifter etc The record output function enables you to layer them up.
