Chen Cheng-po (Chinese: 陳澄波; b. 1895) was a renowned Taiwanese painter. In 1926, his oil painting "Street of Chiayi " was featured in the 7th Empire Art Exhibition in Japan; this was the first time that a painting of a Taiwanese artist could be displayed in the exhibition. In 1933, due to the instability in China, he returned from Shianghai to Chiayi of Taiwan, his hometown. On March 25, 1947, he was executed in public, in the Taiwan 228 Massacre.
During Taiwan 228 Massacre, Mr. Chen did not partake in the resistance to the wanton killing of KMT/ROC troops, but in stead, he went as a peace envoy (on behalf of the local residents) to negotiate with the KMT/ROC troops trapped in a nearby airport. The KMT/ROC troops captured and killed him without any formal trial.
In this video, Mr. Chen Tsong-kwang (陳重光先生), the son of Chen Cheng-po, recalled the execution of his father by KMT/ROC soldiers, in front of the local train station.
