Every year, Filipinos rely on sea vessels as the main form of transport between the countrys 7000 islands.

But poorly trained crews, old and overcrowded ferries and poor safety standards cause over 200 accidents a year.

In the worse accident this year, the MV Princess of the Stars went down in a typhoon, claiming almost 800 lives.

This week on 101 East asks what will it take to put an end to the Philippines disasters at sea?

  • President Arroyo signed the Philippine Coast Guard Law of 2009 last February 12, 2010. It strengthens their capability to promote and ensure safety of life and property at sea.

  • admiral tamayo stopped talking just to give way for professor roque. there's nothing to "wonder" about it.

  • people always expect that there should never be any accidents, everything as safe as possible. But accidents happen, especially when there are that many people travelling the seas in a small area

  • i dont think this is completely fair because if you travel be sea more therate of accidents must increase, in us / uk its moroways that kill people probably the same per capita

  • i agree with the Prof

  • two thumps up to mr. harry! i wondered why mr. tamayo had stopped talking when mr. harry speaks up! ??????

  • I give 5/5 to prof. harry roque...
