What Really Happened When I Forgot My Password

Truthfully my laptop actually died a slow and painful death, well the hard drive did, and when I forgot my password I couldn't recover the information on my hardrive. Ooops! In the end I had to take the poor machine to the professionals who recovered 'some' of the data off the partition.
