HUNDREDS of people enjoyed celebrating the best of rural life as Southport's 1st Plant, Food and Country Fair took place over the weekend.

Sheepdog displays, ferret racing, falconry, dog shows, chainsaw wood carving and even helicopter displays over Southport were enjoyed by people who flocked to Stanley Sports College, Marshside, on Saturday and Sunday.

John Johnson and Robert Abram, from Banks, delighted steam enthusiasts with their collection of historic, and lovingly restored steam engines of all shapes and sizes.

The event brought back many memories for local people who once enjoyed the spring garden events that used to take place at Meols Hall.
