Despite being 11 players against 10 for 80+ minutes Denmark lost the final match of the 1994 World Cup qualifying 1-0 against Spain, and thus, despite conceding only 2 goals in 12 matches, failed to qualify. Final top 3 :

Spain..... 12 +23 19
Ireland... 12 +13 18
------------------------
Denmark 12 +13 18

  • The goalie is running at Bakero (who is not even looking at him), and it all happens outside the 6yd box. Had the ref blown the whistle it would have been to award Spain a penalty.

  • @aeiou333999 Bakero himself would disagree with you. He said later that it was a free kick and that he did it on purpose. And in an interview with Danish television after the game, Ferrer conceded that it looked like a free kick.

  • i would have thought that the german invasion would have been the Worst moment in Danish history

  • @deathkampdrone It still is, it's just not called obstruction anymore: "It is an offence to restrict the movement of the goalkeeper by unfairly impeding him, e.g. at the taking of a corner kick."

  • Forget about Bakero's fault (yes it was a fault). The worse thing that happened to Denmark in this match was Zubizarreta being sent off.

With Zubizarreta in the goalie for the whole game, Denmark would have won or at least draw.

That's how fucking useless he was.

  • well,,,,,,,,this is what i call spanish cojones

  • Guys, back in 93 "obstruction" was still a fault. And if Bakero isn't making a clear obstruction right there, I don't know who ever did.

  • weatherallc05: Yes. He made his pro club mark in Valencia CF.

  • This game was all about one man: GK Santiago Cañizares. Had Zubi (overrated!) not been ejected, maybe Denmark goes through. Instead, it was Santi's show. This game launched his pro career.

  • Gwan Ireland!!!

  • @weatherallc05 In terms of quality they have been better than averge, but before the last 3 years they have always been renowned for failing

  • @jikkh2x guardiola was part of cruyffs dream team WITH BAKERO and Bergiristian, which as you know was very successful. and how were spain average?? they are in the same bracket as brazil, holland and germany. for me those four teams are the powerhouses of football right now. france and italy were, but now they have lost their stars
