Later this month will begin the Year of the Dragon on the Chinese lunar calendar. And to mark the occassion, Beijing is playing host to a massive ice festival, with renditions of the mythical beast.

It will be the Year of the Dragon, and visitors flocked to see dragon sculptures at an ice festival on the outskirts of Beijing on Sunday.

[Tao Jianhua, Resident]:
"I feel very excited, because this year will be the year of the dragon in the lunar calendar, and the dragon is also a symbol for the Chinese people. With the spring festival for the Year of the Dragon approaching, I'm very happy to be able to enjoy the ice festival's atmosphere."

The Longqing Gorge Ice Lantern Festival features over 300 works of ice and snow sculptures, and dragons are a popular theme.

Apart from dragons, groups of ice lanterns and buildings with embedded lights were also on display.

[Wang Xin, Visitor]:
"There are many elements of the dragon in the ice sculptures that we saw today. This is also a normal symbol for the descendants of China. And I hope that our country and Yanqing County can develop to become better."

The festival runs until late February, after the end of the spring festival.
