Top legislator says it´s important to deepen Asia-Europe co-op

The fifth Asia Europe Parliament Partnership meeting has been held here in Beijing. This year's goal is promoting mutual development in Asia and Europe.
The Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, Wu Bangguo, addressed the assembly.

Wu Bangguo greeted the participants and briefed them on the Chinese government and the people's earthquake relief efforts.

The Chairman then spoke of the role parliaments can play. He noted they enjoy extensive links and a rich pool of human resources and information. Wu Bangguo said such strengths should be given full play for useful advice on deepening practical and facilitating cooperation between enterprises and between localities.

Wu Bangguo said, "Asia and Europe, as the significant forces in the multi-polarization of the world, are now much more interdependent and connected even more closely. Therefore it's important to deepen the cooperation between the two continents."

The participants are also positive on the meeting's role in intercontinental cooperation.

ASEP was initiated in 1996. Asia and Europe host the meeting alternately, every two years.
