LOl...de niro actually pumped iron for this film. He was a lot smaller than nick nolte so they made sure he looked physically stronger before they began shooting.

In the bible the lightnings are often the weapons or the demonstration of the power of God. Maybe He wanted to show that his muscles/ six pack are his weapons and He is like God.
or simply to intimidate and dont have any meaning.
