Sandy Bird Honored at Lac Courte Oreilles Honor The Earth Pow Wow

Excilda Sandy Bird is honored at the 2009 Honor The Earth Pow Wow as the Anishinabekwe of the year. Sandy Bird's name is Madwewegiizhigookwe, meaning Resounding Sky Woman. A member of the Bear Clan of Lac Courte Oreilles, Sandy was the youngest of 12 childred of Fred and Madge Smith. Sandy married Nathan Bird, Jr. a HoChunk and they had nine children, Louis, Robert, Daryll, Lynette, Mary Natalie, Lorinda, Gregory and Daniel. Friends and family gathered to pay tribute to a friend, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and confidante in the best way, as Anishinabekwe of the 2009 Honor The Earth woman of the year.
