A Gripping Story of Sacrifice, Suffering, and Ongoing Injustice.

In 1916 German scientists made an 80-second audio recording of a Sikh soldier captured at the Battle of Flanders during WWI. The starving soldier, Mal Singh, yearns to return to his home in the Punjab, the "land of butter and milk."

Retired Indian Colonel Perminder Singh Randhawa reflects on Mal Singh's fate, and locates his descendants still living in the ancestral village, and hoping to receive his long-forgotten pension.
A film by Michael Singh, presented by ASHT.

First screened in the UK at National Army Museum, London on Saturday 12th September, as part of
Heritage Shared 2009: A season of events presented by the Anglo Sikh Heritage Trail. www.asht.info

  • The balck and white images of rural punjab at the begining of the video clip are from the 1930's Jhelum District Pakistan showing local muslim villagers, you can easily find it on youtube and other sites. It has nothing to do with the Sikhs. Please use a more accurate clip.

  • I disagree, bhangraboyin, this isn't nice at all. These men fought and suffered and deserve the thanks of the Brits in a financial way. They deserve the pensions they earned.

  • very nice
