Mindy Smith is in the Second Cup Café this week, performing the song, 'Jolene'. Mindy's debut album won her the award for Best New Artist and her album, 'Stupid Love' was just released recently.

she has a beautiful voice, but this isn't my favorite cover.

For those not familiar with her work, she is very talented, sincere and creative songwriter as well as singer, you can go to her website and hear other songs or on the playlist here. She can be stage shy, fussy about tuning and sensitive to surroundings. I have heard her live and she is warm and sensitive and very moving to listen to, but I think the "one song set" format is not best for her, it takes her a bit to settle in, then as she says "it will be worth it"...and it is,

This version is oriented toward the darker side of the song's emotional spectrum, and as a result it's quite different. Unfortunately the clear phrasing of presenting true emotion is completely absent, and that gives the performance the tired feeling of excess labour.

another sad commentary about the american obsession on weight...sad really.Such a very talented musician and all that can be said about her was her weight and little about her talent.
