IRELAND have beaten Australia at Etihad Stadium on Friday night trashing the home side by 44 points.
The 4.17.5 (80) to 1.8.6 (36) triumph was the highest winning margin in the history of the hybrid game, eclipsing Australia's 38-point victory in 2006.
The visitors put the result beyond doubt early in the match, booting four 'overs' (worth three points) and an 'under' (worth six points) before the home team registered a major score.
They jumped to an 18-point quarter-time lead and were never challenged, extending the margin further at every change.
Not only was Ireland's use of the round ball far superior, but they also more than matched Australia in the areas they were meant to be deficient.
They tackled with vigour, weren't intimidated by the bigger Australian bodies and never stopped running.
Steven McDonnell starred for the Irish in front of goal, booting an under and four overs, with lively forward Leighton Glynn contributing an under and two overs, and newly recruited Sydney Swan Tommy Walsh three overs.
Winning skipper Stephen Cluxton dominated, collecting 38 disposals as the goalkeeper.
Further afield, retired Sydney Swan Tadhg Kennelly and Brisbane Lion Pearce Hanley provided damaging run and silky round-ball skills.
For Australia, captain Brad Green booted the only under and one over, and Stephen Milne kicked two overs.
Although beaten all over the ground, the Australians didn't help themselves by missing several set shots similar to those being easily converted by the Irish at the other end.
Adelaide pair Bernie Vince and Richard Douglas worked tirelessly to be their team's leading contributors, with Geelong's James Kelly also busy.
Largely played in good spirit, the match briefly threatened to re-visit the series' fiery past during the third quarter when Ireland's Emmet Bolton was collected heavily by Mitch Robinson in a ground-level contest.
A push and shove involving at least 20 players erupted in the middle of the ground, but was quickly broken up, as Bolton left the field on a stretcher. He was later diagnosed with concussion.
Australia must now win next Friday night's Second Test at Metricon Stadium by more than 44 points to claim a series victory.
They may have to do so without Richmond small forward Jake King, who jarred his knee and is rated only a 50-50 chance to recover in time for next week.
Hawthorn midfielder Liam Shiels suffered a cork, but is expected to be fit for the Gold Coast clash.
