In this video we look at the fractured relationship between John and Elizabeth due to John's affair with Abigail.

* How does Elizabeth react when she finds out John has been alone with Abigail?
* Why does she try to carry on as normal?
* What would happen to the Proctors if the society knew that John had had an affair?
* Why do they make idle chit chat at the beginning of the scene? What does it tell us about their relationship?

  • I'm playing Elizabeth Proctor at college and i have to say that she is a tricky character to play the actress from the movie does amazing and this video really helped me understand her more so hopefully i can do a better job thank you for posting. x

  • @kidxstream So true. Whoever plays Elizabeth at school always complains that she's boring. She really isn't. There's so much going on behind her eyes, coldness, bitterness, grief and opposing forces telling her to do one thing when she wants to be another. You've got a great part to play and you're right, Joan Allen did a wonderful job of keeping her emotions just tucked away but surface enough for everyone to see she is fighting. All the best for the performance.

  • great vids.. however i am stuck with one question, what causes John and elizabeth's relationship to develop?

  • How do you mean?

  • well there is no doubt about it, John and Elizabeth's realtion turns from the cold and bitter one as seen at the begining of the play, and towards the end you see that Elizabeth even puts john infront of God (at court) what cuses the transition from cold to them loving eachother?

  • I understand. She says it at the end "it takes a cold wife to prompt lechery"

In the time they have been separated they have both thought and searched themselves. That puts everything into perspective for them. Simply put, its a case of "absence makes the heart grow fonder".

  • This helped a lot in my understanding of the play. both characters have so much depth and character, i love them both! :D

i only wish the film adaptation had the idle chit chat- i love the bit about the rabbit :$

    thank you again!

  • @vitolaterza Elizabeth grew suspicious of them (Abigail used to work in the Proctor household) and confronted Proctor, who confessed. This is related in a scene in the full text of the play and in this video from 3.57ish.

  • how does Elizabeth actually know about John Proctor And Abigails affair?

  • 5:46 scared me! Hahahaa

  • Thank you so much for this. I needed help with my college assignment and this sure has helped :D

  • Im in year 11 and playing John in March amd personally i cannot wait, he is a fairly complex character, but such a great character, I cant wait.

  • luv the intro/background music!!!! :)

  • can you put the scene where elizabeth tries to convince john to confess after he's thrown into jail? before he's hanged?

  • @neongreenmaracas1

You're in 8th, and they're having you play a complex character like Elizabeth? That's rather impressive.

  • OMG! THANK YOU SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH! I've had to write an essay about the relationship between John and Elizabeth and you have been SO helpful. I will send out a link to some friends because I know they will find it useful too! :)
