  • Rev. Charles Tindley wrote the words in 1901, but had a different tune. Atron Twigg took Tindley's words and put them to an old Catholic tune several years later. Pete Seeger kind of made it famous, and the song got national attention when Joan Baez led 300,000 during Dr. King's march on Washington in 1963. Since then its been done by many many choirs and singers, but its like Amazing Grace - really no "original" performance.
