IRAN BY TRAIN : Trip to Paradise pt1

In April 2002, director Ben van Lieshout and cameraman Stef Tijdink travel by train across Iran, from the caviar of the Caspian Sea to the oil of the Persian Gulf. It is the month of mourning; black flags fly above the streets, where people are dressed in black. They have sufficient reasons to mourn: unemployment rates in Iran are high and the economy is only deteriorating. Though the deceased leader Khomeini still seems to be sincerely worshipped, the popularity of the current leaders is on the wane. Even though youngsters are still drawn to the sacrifices of the revolution and the eight-year war with Iraq, which the regime indefatigably holds up as an example. In the mountain villages of Iran however, away from the big city, this ostentatious fanaticism dissolves and the filmmakers come upon a tranquil serenity.


Reis naar het Paradijs

Iran, april 2002. Regisseur Ben van Lieshout en cameraman Stef Tijdink reizen per spoor van de Kaspische Zee naar de Perzische Golf, dwars door Iran - van de kaviaar naar de olie. Het is rouwmaand, overal hangen zwarte vlaggen en de mensen gaan in het zwart gekleed. Ze treffen een land aan waar grote werkloosheid heerst en waar de economische situatie alsmaar verslechtert. Mensen zijn ontevreden en zijn alleen maar bezig 'hun eigen tapijt uit het water te halen'. Het respect en de devote toewijding voor wijlen de grote leider Khomeiny lijkt oprecht; tegelijkertijd daalt de populariteit van de huidige geestelijke leiders zienderogen. De 'martelaren-industrie' doet er ondertussen alles aan de glorieuze opofferingen van de revolutie en de Achtjarige Oorlog met Irak springlevend te houden. Het vooruitzicht van een paradijselijk leven in het hiernamaals inspireert nog altijd veel jonge mannen.

De poging van de regisseur om de herkomst van zijn eigen tapijt boven water te krijgen voert hen weg van het religieus en politiek fanatisme, naar stille bergdorpen met bewoners die zo uit een Kiarostami-film lijken te komen.
