Nubians troops are depicted on Constantine's arch in Rome. African troops were deployed in Germany and Britain. Use of Africans to suppress a rebellion in Gaul is not improbable - the Emperor would assume they would be more loyal than local troops. Also, Nubians were often Christian at this time. This legend may very wellbe based on historical fact.
