This is a river that dries up over summer that normally leads into the sea, every year the water flows back builds up and begins to flow back into the sea. These guys came along and basically started the river going early by digging a trench for it to flow down, since its such a big river it has a lot of water behind it and was able to create a fast flowing wave stream for them to surf. This is a natural occurrence, not damaging any natural space or wildlife that lives in and around the water.

If you think this "destroys the beach" that only shows how ignorant you are and that you've clearly never been to Waimea Bay. Otherwise, you'd know Waimea River has been periodically flowing into the ocean across the beach like this for centuries. Hasn't "destroyed the beach" yet, not sure what makes you think it did this time. Morons.

this is amazing, i'd hope to one day come to waimea bay just to grab an innertube and float around for a minute then to ride into the sea! only a short way haha.
