Showcasing AFTRS graduates and what some of them are up to lately...

Sandy Widyanata (Digital Media, 2008) & Courtney Wise (Producing, 2008) studied together at AFTRS in 2007 and collaborated on this multi-award winning AFTRS short while they were students at AFTRS.

Plastic is a live action short film that uses extensive photo-realistic visual effects and 3D animation.

Sandy & Courtney explain the processes they used to create the multi award winning Plastic:

"We aimed to integrate the technology so the visual effects are seamless and supportive of the story and
character's journey. We wanted the audience to stay connected to the story and the character rather than be
impressed by overly dominant visual effects. We recognise that without the technology used to tell this the story
- the message of Plastic would never have been achievable or feasible.

The film was entirely shot and finished on HD with a lot of hard work and painstaking precision required to
accomplish the VFX in full resolution HD.

The software used was Alias Maya and Pixologic's Z-Brush for the 3D modeling and animation, Apple Shake
for tracking and compositing and Boujou Bullet for additional 3D tracking. Further applications used were Adobe
Photoshop and After Effects.

Shane Rolton (WYSIWYG 3D) and Ben Tam (Qubic) supported the production by executing the full 3D
body scans of the actress catering for the possibility of having to replace shots with 3D elements if the 2D
warping effect didn't work out according to plan."
