This aired on PBS on November 6th, 1990. It deals specifically with the Illinois state lottery, and the woman who ran (runs?) it, Sharon Sharp, but also raises other larger questions about state lotteries.

  • And her amazing green shirt too. So much crazy.

Remember kids, a state-sponsored lottery is simply a tax on people who can't do math.

  • I would personally like to thank the janitor for paying the $70,000 idiot tax. Takes the burden from the rest of us

  • I just spend what I can afford, maybe $2 per game. I pick one set of numbers and a quick pick. But if you spend more than you can afford, then it is gambling.

  • That story about the coffee with a lady is a load of BS

  • Sharon seemed savvy but also a little too impressed by the amounts of money in question. Some people might call her attitude nouveau riche.

  • At 1:40 check out the funding with the public television viewers (AKA viewers like you) and the corporation for public broadcasting logo without the words!

  • At first I thought she was a bitch, but actually, I kind of like her. She's real! She's "direct" and forward. She's not putting on a fake smile, saying 'yay, you could win!' She's harsh and just doing her job. Very true.

  • Lottory is a tax...on suckers.

  • i can't even finish watching this. makes me sick.

  • 0:31 "Folks are actually flying in from overseas to purchase tickets" I don't know about that state but on the back of the lotto tickets here, it says you must be a U.S. citizen. Hope they have family that is here that can claim the prize.

  • She died of lung cancer in '09 ps btw fyi. Interesting lady, that's for sure.
