In answer to all the questions about Merlin and the anachronisms: he is supposed to be living his life backwards in time. So he started in the future and is heading into the past. It's a bit woolly - he knows about Bermuda shorts and dishwashers but not what's about to happen in a minute's time. T H White skates over the problems in the book and Disney barely mentions it.
