SEL is a school-wide, climate-change initiative to boost academic achievement, remove barriers to learning, and increase recruitment and retention. Schools receive intensive professional development, coaching and consultation throughout the school year on strategies and structures for creating caring learning connections between students, teachers, parents, and the entire school community. In addition, teachers prevent risky behaviors by teaching and practicing social and emotional skills.
Numerous research studies have shown that if social and emotional skills are taught and practiced and students feel a sense of connectedness to their school and their teacher, learning and academic performance will increase. Studies have also proven that parent involvement in their students' school life is a critical ingredient for student success. East Side Central Elementary and Toledo Public Schools (TPS) are ranked "continuous improvement" by the state and are ready to take this school to the next level of performance. They believe this initiative can make that happen.
