The ancient mode of draught animals being used for cultivation is prevelant in kolvan valley near Lonavala just 2 1/2 drive by the mode of 21st century transport, the motor vehicle.
These pair of oxen are ploughing a small rice field in kolvan village in the state of Maharashtra. In south India its mostly buffaloes that are used for ploughing.
Tractors have made inroads into most village farming and the days of cattle being used for ploughing seem numbered as they are more expensive to maintain being profitable only for farmers with small land holdings and hence can't use tractors.
