When a child lives with a mental illness, sometimes their behaviors-the symptoms of that illness-become difficult to manage at home and in the community. For those children with intensive needs, residential treatment is sometimes necessary. Treatment provides the therapeutic and highly structured environment that promotes recovery for children and youth.
A new law, Minnesota Statute 260D, Child in Voluntary Foster Care for Treatment, governs how parents place their chid in residential or foster care for treatment of a mental illness or developmental disability. The new law makes it clear that parents do not have to relinquish custody to obtain treatment for their child. The film outlines and explains in detail, the legal perspective and timelines associated with voluntary out-of-home placement while also highlighting the family's perspective.
