Debra as a character is an immensely flawed human being, naieve, stubborn, hysterical, insecure, inexperienced and whiny. Many people (including me at first) got very annoyed with the character and blamed Carpenter's portrayal for it.
The truth is though that Carpenter plays this character to absolute perfection. I have never seen anything like it before. Debra is supposed to be all those things and Carpenter pulls it off waaaay too realistically for the majority to fathom.
