the story goes, they couldn't get the song to flow, it failed numerously
then Bonham had the idea of playing with his hands, and then with 2 sticks in each hand (hence the name of the song ...). Aside from hurting a wee bit, it must have bamboozled everyone, not to mention Bonham himself.
He's a percussionist, guys. He reveres other percussionists. Any comments to the 'Africans' is a sign of respect. Anyone who is half a musician will know that
;)

... do my eardrums need a good sound scrubbing or did I hear Bonzo (at :38) say "Fawkin' Africans" (???)

How anyone can assert that the guys in the band "were in part...gay..." is beyond me.
-
also, not many people realise now ...they were bagged by mainstream media when they first came out, the columnists of Rolling Stone (the mag) being particularly brutal (in fact, without let off right up until '75). They were at serious odds with mainstream media, to be polite about it. Just my opinion, but acceding to media interviews, would've been like furnishing the buggers' nests...Who wouldn't feel the same..?

i love it right after bonzo's count. Theres so much energy and power when the song starts. True legends! Long live Zep!!!!

At last I know how to count in the tune....
And who cares what Bonzo was muttering on about before the start. If he did say "Facking Africans" then it was probably meant as a compliment rather than anything racist. Zep "borrowed" very heavily from black American blues music in their early days, and also African and Indian music later on, and Bonzo was influenced by Billy Cobham and Bernard Purdie as much as he was by Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa.

@pierre766 I'm sorry for myself. I let a bad epiteth slip out... Led zep was not a racist group. If anything they promoted world music before anyone else (challenged only by George Harrison). What I meant was: part of their image was fabricated and we seldom seen them off stage because the boys had a tendency to get rawdy. Bonzo was rawdy at times too...

Really? I thought that they didn't like interviews because the interviewers were more interested about what they had for breakfast than in the music they wrote.
And, exactly what's wrong with being gay?

I don't expect them to.
Theres no copyrighted material there. It's literally all of us playing. They can't touch it.
