Hydrophobic aerogel is floating on water. Few drops of gasoline is added on the water and aerogel adsorbs the fuel, not water. This feature is described in Science Daily: see http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/02/090213102721.htm for details. Next, linked video shows burning of the immersed aerogel proving the fuel recoverability by evaporation.

  • Are there different types of aerogel?  I just watched another video that shows the aerogel absorbing all the water.

  • @ccederlo yes, 1. is hydrophilic - adsorbs water, 2. is hydrophobic - repels water, adsorbs oil
