Behemoths swim offshore in Californias offshore waters. Giant fish of over 300 lbs. Surprisingly, they are easy to approach, in fact, anecdotal reports from sport divers indicate a rise in close encounters in recent years. Does this mean the fish that was protected by the state legislature is making a recovery? Not exactly according to Michael Domieir, PhD, of the Pfleger Institute of Environmental Research.

They are making a bit of a comeback, but they have been protected for over 3 decades. I fished So Cal for close to 2 decades and hadn't seen many juveniles caught. My suspicion is that they are being taken as "rock fish" by commercial and (uneducated) sport fishermen, and wantonly speared by "blue-water hunters".
