1. SECURITY TIGHT AFTER STUDENT PROTESTS IN AMDO.
Security was tightened on Monday at schools in Amdo region following demonstrations last week by Tibetan students who marched to protest plans to impose Chinese as the language of instruction. According to AP reports, police and plainclothes security officials were stationed at several middle schools in Amdo Rebgong area. In the meantime, the news of the Tibetan students' protest sparked spontaneous marches and candle vigils in the US, Europe and India, expressing their solidarity and support to the Tibetan students' ongoing protests in Tibet.
2. DALAI LAMA VISITS TORONTO, CANADA
Ugyen Norbu reports from Toronto, Canada, on the Dalai Lama's visit to Toronto where he inaugurated the Tibetan Canadian Cultural Centre and later gave a public talk at Roger's Centre..
3. Dalai Lama Meets with Canada Chinese community.
Pema Dorjee reports on the Dalai Lama's address to the participants of a dialogue between members of the Chinese communities under the theme of "Compassion and Respect". He told the Chinese audience about his three commitments of promoting religious harmony, human values and resolution of the Tibetan problem. Special Envoy Lodi Gyari spoke to the gathering about the China-Tibet dialogue process earlier in the day.
4. The US Midterm Election.
The United States held its last election for president in 2008, and it will choose a President again in 2012. The White House is not at stake but the outcome of the "midterm elections" for seats in the US Congress can affect the President and his administration's agenda -- sometime profoundly.
5. International News in brief:
a. Nobel -- China
The wife of Nobel Peace Prize winner Liu Xioabo has invited more than 100 Chinese dissidents and celebrities to represent her husband at the Nobel award ceremony in Oslo in December. But in a open letter circulating on the Internet, Liu Xia writes that it is very unlikely that the Chinese government will allow her or her husband to leave China to attend the December 10 event.
b. India - Japan.
The leaders of India and Japan signed Monday a sweeping agreement to increase trade and speed up talks toward a civilian nuclear energy deal.
