If you really are interested in the math of poker then read "The Mathematics of Poker" book. I bought it a month ago, A very hard book to understand and you need a basic knowledge of mathematics. Nearly all of the stuff I did not understand. It needs more reading.
But it is very interesting and a great book if you are interested in math and poker.
In a nutshell, first check what you need to call and calculate the pot odds. This is everything in the pot, including your opponent's bet, against what you need to call. So, if there's $4 in the pot and your opponent bets $2, you need to call $2 to try to win $6.
POT ODDS: 6:2 (3:1)
Then add one to the first number. You need to win 1 out of every 4 hands to break even: 25%
Then check your outs on the flop. If 3 cards win you the hand, 3x4=12. You only have a 12% chance of winning. Fold.
If a bet is 2:1, say someone bets $10 into a $10 pot, you need to call $10 to try and win $20, you need to win every 3rd one of these bets to break even. So, 2:1 on your money or better means you need at least 33% chance of winning.
WIth a flush draw on the flop, it's correct to call up to the pot against one player because your odds of drawing to a winning hand are 36%, but the POT ODDS are 2:1, meaning you only need a 33% or better chance to win.

An out is a card that will turn your losing hand into a winner.
A fundamental strategy is to multiply your outs by 4 on the flop and 2 on the turn to calculate your percentage of winning.
If you have 4 to a flush on the flop, you have 9 outs and roughly a 36% chance of winning the hand.
