This engine intrigued me because it is a two stroke engine.

This is a Junkers HK 65, 2 Stroke opposed-piston diesel engine, built in Chemnitz, Germany in the early 1930's. It develops 12 hp at 1000 rpm.

It was on display at the Booleroo Steam and Traction day, Sunday 30 March 2008.

  • @casnick1 12 bhp at 1000 rpm means that little diesel is banging out 63 ft/lbs of torque at 1000 rpm!!

    This is the same peak torque as the Citroen AX 1360 cc naturally aspirated 4 cylinder diesel, that required 2500 rpm to attain the same 63 ft/lbs! Those 2 stroke diesels are seriously grunty!

  • @hiyadroogs - I have riden two stroke motocross bikes most of my life and know how powerful they can be for there size. That is why this two stroke diesel engine caught my eye. When I heard it operating later in the day I thought it just purred like a kitten. They certainly knew how to make engines in those days.

  • Thats NOT an opposed piston engine!

    Its a loop scavenge engine, look at the exhaust position and lack of upper crankshaft or crosshead rockers!!!

  • Mate, honestly I had no idea personally. However, having now done some research, it definately is a Junkers Engine. Its either the 1HK65 or 1SHK65, both of which are opposed piston engines. It is definately not a loop scavange engine, the exhaust outlet is in the wrong position. Google Geocities HK65. It has a great picture of a 'cut open' engine that shows the oppsoed piston arrangement.

  • @fixitdude74 - No sorry, plenty of sites with pictures of complete engines, but none showing a 'cut opn' engine.

  • No, I believe casnick1 is quite right. These engines had a set of long connecting rods running down to the crank from the upper piston. I wonder if the pistons reached "TDC" at slightly different times like the Junkers aerodiesel engines.
