Black Day July was the nickname of the Battle of Prokhorvoka. July 12, 1943, the German Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS were planning to assault the Kursk Salient where the Soviet 5th Guards Tank Guard was stationed in defense. The Russians secretly placed their own men in the ranks of high command where they figured out the details of the German offensive operation known as operation Citadel. The Germans would use 5 Panzer Armies to push forward in a Pincer formation and destroy the Soviet Defensive. If successful, the Germans would create a new offensive front and push the Soviets back to Russia. However, thanks to the detailed info sent back to Russian high command, commanders kept the line alive. The onslaught began and both sides suffered high casualties. The Soviets however had more armored and man power than the Germans and successfully defended the Kursk line. Due to this loss, the Germans would never again have the power to create another offensive front, and till the end of the war, retreated back to where WWII began, at Berlin. To this day, the Battle of Prokhorovka is the bloodiest tank battle in combat history.
In Red Orchestra, you get to relive the battle, The SOviets defend 6 areas while the Germans try to capture them. The German Tanks were 2 types of Panzer IV's (AUSF F2 and AUSF H), Panzer III's, Stug III's, Tiger I (AUSF E) and Captured T-34'76. The Soviets only have T-34/76's and KV1's, but have a ton to spare.
I have this whole soundtrack on CD and it's quite good.
This is a good tank map in the game as well.
