What are your experiences while dealing with your hearing child(ren)'s teacher? Are they postive or negative?

For those who don't know or are learning ASL:

Hello, I'm Amanda. I'm from Thunder Bay, Ontario. Most people sign "Thunder Bay" but it's really fingerspelled "TB".

This is my first vlog. Everybody's starting up vlogs and tech. is forever improving so I'm gonna jump in.

Now I wanted to discuss your experiences with your child's teacher. How would you approach the teachers? For example, my sons in gr 2 and my daugthers in gr 1 so they ve been in school for a while now. When my son started school, I had this idea from my deaf friends to write teachers a letter explaining who I am. I would write that I'm deaf, my children's first language is ASL and their second language is english just so they're aware of it. IF they notice them a little behind, they will be aware of it and they can make sure they encourage the kids. They also will know that my kids aren't delayed, that it's only because english is their second language.

THen I go on explaining that I need an interpreter for parents teacher interview because it will ensure communication goes clearly and smoothly. Then I explain how to contact an interpreter. I explain about the interprter's role as well in the letter. After a while, I will get a letter back from the teachers who are relieved because they now know how to communciate with me. Through letters and with interpreters at parents teacher interview. They are always appreciative of the letters.

I'm curious how your experiences with your children's teachers are. I also am curious about if you have the same experiences as mine and whether they are positive or negative.

  • Seems hard for you to teach your children ASL but you can't say if they're doing right.

  • @bluedude4256 ??? what made you think it was a tutorial???

  • Thanks for taking the time to translate for people new to ASL. This subject is interesting and I'm glad you have had good experiences with your children's teachers.

  • @bluedude4256 thanks again for the feedback. :)

  • @mhnicholson thanks for the feedback! This was my first time vlogging so I'm still learning. I guess its time to make a new one pretty soon since the last time I made one was TWO years ago. :)

  • Next time please put the light behind the camera instead of behind you. Otherwise it is more tiring to see what you are saying.

  • That is /not/ a tutorial on the basics on ASL. Rather, it is a transcipt of your video. Please be more clear in the future :-)
