Monica Taylor wrote this song about the "Migrant Mother" featured in the famous pictures by Dorothea Lange (Library of Congress).
Singer/songwriter Monica Taylor is a "red dirt girl," who grew up in the small community of Perkins, Oklahoma, near Stillwater. At Oklahoma State University, she honed her skills playing bluegrass and country music. After living in Colorado for a few years, she returned to the Sooner State. Beautiful, Lata. I have always loved this song. When Monica sang it on 'Prairie Home Companion', I was on my way back home from Texas and had to pull over to the side of the road because she was making me cry. I still can't believe it didn't win first place in the Woodyfest songwriting competition the year she and Patrick wrote it. I can't imagine any song being better crafted or more apropos for that festival.
