Education used to be about transfer of information from teacher to student. Now there is too much information available in the world. Much of this information is being used by people trying to sell us something: an idea, a product, a political agenda, a way of seeing our entire country.
New Hampton School's Junior Urban Adventure attempts to turn around this notion of one-way education in the same way that Web 2.0 is changing the way we think about the web. Students will learn to ask questions, make meaning from the glut of information available to them and engage, upload and maybe even start to solve some of the world's problems.
I was inspired by many people and many YouTubers to create this video - and much of their work appears here. More than that - I've also been inspired by them to make their ideas actionable and create a learning experience that I hope will do justice to their work.
Ken Robinson of TEDTalks for his thoughts on education and creativity:http://www.youtube.com/watch? v=iG9CE55wbtY (I know this link is broken, when I type it in it looks fine, try copying and pasting it and fixing the space)
And of course mwesch for his seminal video on web 2.0 that got me started thinking about education 2.0 and formed the model for this video in the first place - thanks!: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NLlGop...
Update 4/23/09 - I started a 'promotion' on this video yesterday to learn about how that works. Leave a comment: does this enhance or devalue this video?

Wow - power is right! Huge bump in viewers from Stumbleupon... do you know if I can track back through stumbleupon and see where the clicks were coming from?
You know, I've noticed something very odd about our schooling system (considering I am still a part of it). I feel like a sheep, herded from classroom to classroom. We are systematically taught, in large groups with little attention to individual needs. When the bell rings, we go to our next class almost instinctively. In the end, most teachers don't care if you got an A or a C, they are being our Shepard. That and the teaching by the textbook doesn't do much to help ME understand info
Yes, good observation! This setup was a handy once upon a time, when training young people for manufacturing jobs was highly desirable. The needs of our nation have changed but many of our schools haven't. Where once the 'sheep' mentality was useful, now we need creativity and skepticism and synthesis.
