The Rockefeller Foundation, the New America Foundation, and Yale University economic security expert Jacob Hacker are pleased to invite you to attend the launch of the Economic Security Index (ESI), a groundbreaking new index that provides the first integrated measure of Americans' economic insecurity.

The ESI is a simple but powerful tool for assessing the economic security of Americans. It has been developed over the last three years by a research team led by Professor Jacob Hacker of Yale University. The measure can be used to analyze long-term trends in the average level of economic security within the United States, as well as differences in economic security across individuals and families of varying demographic characteristics. As the nation still grapples with the Great Recession, the ESI provides a timely look at the past and present state of American economic security.

The ESI measures the percentage of American families who are economically insecure. Specifically, the ESI represents the share of Americans that experience at least a 25 percent decline in their available household income from one year to the next and who lack an adequate financial safety net to replace this lost income. The index is available from 1985 to 2007, with projections for 2008 and 2009—and a new projection for 2010 to be unveiled at the event. (In addition, a less complete form of the index is available back to the late 1960s.)
