Kasin Hunter says a sad good-bye to her old American Harvest dehydrator; and a happy hello to her new Excalibur 3900 dehydrator. She makes yogurt fruit jerky (roll-ups), cheese, chili-con-carne, and more.

  • Hey Kashin I love to dehydrate frozen veggies. They are pre-blanched, pre-cut and oh so easy. I make mixes for stews. I also make a lot of veggie powder for broths.

Just curious, how does that machine do on electricity? I used my American Harvester everyday for a month and it cost me approx $25 to $30. I was just curious.

  • @Ladyshystar Yes! Me, too! Soooo much easier. I've had good luck with the green leafy veggies like collard greens and spinach in the frozen variety. Veggie powder is a smart way to go. Of course they expire sooner since more sides are exposed for oxidation, but gosh, you can't beat the convenience and added nutrition.

You're doing better than I am checking on electricity. I've never done that. I do have an acquaintance that runs 5 dh'ers 24/7, and he's never complained about cost. humm

  • @VivianRinSC GREAT tip on the parchment I misplaced my rounds during our last move. I hated the thought of having to order new ones. Thanks!

  • Beautiful machine. I want one because my dehydrator is 15 years old,

I crumble dehydrated spinach into soups and on pizza - yum

  • Last night, I started dehydrating my soy bean paste to make soy sauce. My current experiment. Anyway, I needed more of those solid round thingies but only had one so I used parchment paper. It worked great! So if you have to in a pinch, you can use that. Cut holes or not make fit the whole tray. It should work. :) Oh, for a timer, you could use the outlet timers which are really cheap after Christmas. Great for tree lights, lamps and dehydrators. lol

Congrats on your new toy! :)
