The second recording is from '65? That's extraordinarily impressive. MDM was 50 at that time and had already been through his traumatic car wreck. It goes to show that he still had remnants of his past glory shine through even in his later performances.

I listened to Enrico Caruso, but there is no comparison with the great Mario Del Monaco.
Caruso was lower in vocal power

SInce I havent heard Caruso, due to the fact that I havent got any decent recordings of his yet,I must vote for Mario as best Canio ever.His power is unrivaled,his emotion unmatched,he was simply born to perform CanioYes his greatest role was Otello,in which no other tenor came close so far,but he was also great as Canio,Radames,Manrico, Samson,Don Jose,Chenier, Cavaradossi,Pinkerton,Johnson etc.Hes much underrated in these roles cause many think of him as Otello only,and that is far from truth

He was the greatest Canio of them all (after Caruso of course)...riveting! Even Tucker cannot trump him in this role, except at the finale.
