@kenj41ne If we did a good act merely from love of God and a belief that it is pleasing to Him, whence arises the morality of the Atheist? ...Their virtue, then, must have had some other foundation than the love of God.
-Thomas Jefferson, letter to Thomas Law, June 13, 181
But it does me no injury for my neighbor to say there are twenty gods or no God. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg.
-Thomas Jefferson, Notes on Virginia, 1782

Question with boldness even the existence of a god; because if there be one he must approve of the homage of reason more than that of blindfolded fear.
-Thomas Jefferson, letter to Peter Carr, August 10, 1787
Christianity neither is, nor ever was a part of the common law.

@kenj41ne they were mostly deists first of all. second, even if they were all chirstians, it doesn't mean it is our state religion...and do you mean the writings like...
Millions of innocent men, women and children, since the introduction of Christianity, have been burnt, tortured, fined and imprisoned; yet we have not advanced one inch towards uniformity.
-Thomas Jefferson, Notes on Virginia, 1782...

@denalaurens Not counting the millions of people who voted for Obama with a ten million margin over McCain.
As an American I m a getting a little sick and tired of you guys acting as if no one else exists in this country but you.

@kenj41ne Might want to read the history a little more closely.
while many of our ancestors did come here to escape religious persecution, many of them had no problem persecuting others. Indeed, many of the colonies had state sponsored religion which is why Jefferson and Madison were so insistent about separation of church and state.
Oh & the Founders had very different ideas about Religion. You do know Jefferson rewrote the Bible to get rid of the supernatural bits, right?
-
@kenj41ne "They said that Congress shall not enact any laws that restrict the freedom of religion. "
OR write any law giving special respect or consideration to a religion.
It's a 2 way street. Government can't write laws that discriminate against or for a religion.
The phrase of course was used by Jefferson, Madison & inspired by Locke.
Which if you had read the history of this great country of ours you would have known.

@FlyinSpaghettiMnstr7 "We" never came anywhere. Our ancestor's did. They came here for a variety of reasons, one of which was religious persecution. Here they were able to practice their religion and they did not have to practice a state sponsored religion. All the founders believed in Christ and their writings show that. Why do you think every session of Congress begins with a prayer? I would love to give you a lesson in history but i think you would be to stupid to understand it.

@booley they don't think, they just follow the heard

@kenj41ne again, we are a secular country and always were, get over it. slavery is not legal and blasphemy is not punishable by death, we came here to get away from theocracy, not do it again.
-
@cabinmtngirl we're secular, sorry.
Weird though.
If Jesus was in charge of the Constitution and hated Liberals, then why is the constitution so very Liberal?
I mean, the constitution makes sure that your religion has nothing to do with whether you can run for office or vote.
It protects the supposedly "Liberal Media".
It doesn't distinguish between a Christian or a Muslim or an Atheist.
It set up the Judiciary that did al those "controversial " decisions.
