I've found that the purpose of the Cinema Mode is to suck out saturation and a little sharpness so that you can color correct in post. Cinema Mode makes your footage look the way it would natively on film. When color correcting you need to lower the gamma value and brighten the highlights a bit. I've noticed the midtones are always pretty good the way they are.
