The Winchester Cathedral Choristers' performance of Over the Rainbow at Alan Ball's funeral clearly moved a huge number of people: as they played out the TV coverage it was a highly emotional moment. The song is of great significance to the Ball family: it was played at Alan's wedding to his late wife Lesley, at all of their children's weddings, and at Lesley's funeral. Having consulted with the Ball family, we decided to record it professionally, in memory of Alan Ball -- with proceeds from the download sales being given to the Bobby Moore Fund, which is part of Cancer Research UK and was the Balls' chosen charity at the funeral.

The song is glorious! Andrew Lumsden, Winchester Cathedral Director of Music, has created a sublime arrangement which fits the boys' voices perfectly. Alan Ball's children, Mandy, Keeley and Jimmy are delighted that "this beautiful song, which has meant so much to our Dad and the whole family, is being enjoyed by others and helping to support the Bobby Moore fund."

The Choristers have just returned from Germany where they opened the highly acclaimed Handel Festival in Gottingen, Dresden and Hannover. They hope that Over the Rainbow will sell well, raise lots of money for the Bobby Moore Fund and will be a lasting memorial to a great man.

  • I can vouch for Ali Dugdale's comment. The full song is much better quality than the 'you tube' clip. So dig deep into your pockets for a good cause.

  • I just downloaded the song from itunes - the second part is even more beautiful than this clip, as the boys' vices really get going. I recommend you listen to the whole thing!

  • I'll second hk770. Who was Alan Ball? Please understand I'm just a grit from Virginia. While you guy probably get inundated with news about American celebrities we only hear about your major ones: the Royals, the big rock stars, your PM, and that's about it.

  • Alan Ball was a feisty member of the English soccer team when England last won the World Cup back in 1966. He was also a nice guy, so, when he passed away recently, he really did deserve the privilege of having the Winchester Choir to sing him on his way: a worthy tribute, and now a nice little souvenir for all of us. The full version of the song, on iTunes, is well worth its £0.79 in a good cause.

  • Have downloaded song from itunes.. delighted but how do you down load the cover for printing?

  • Well done the Pilgrim's School and the Choristers. Lets hope others follow your lead.

  • Oh wow... what a great idea! I'll have to go and find iTunes then!

  • This was the piece sung for Alan Ball's funeral three weeks ago. Thanks for posting this.
