I have reworked an original Sapphire XV radio for a '71 Super Beetle to accommodate an auxiliary device such as an MP3 player, XM radio, portable CD player or FM tuner. The radio retains its stock looks and sounds surprisingly crisp with nice tone.

  • No FM Modulator. It's a simple modification adding the extra circuitry for the input jack and switch. The only internal modification is the desoldering of a single wire from the receiver to the volume potentiometer to add a SPDT (Single Pole, Dual Throw) switch. This modification cost less that $20 and everything was available at Radio Shack.

  • All you really need is :

    1 SPDT switch

    1 1/8" female phono plug

    2 10K resisters

    wire

    solder

    heatshrink tubing

  • Thanks for the shopping list. I have the same radio in my Bus and have pulled it to do this mod. Please can you post a wiring diagram and an explanation. Many thanks.

  • Very interested in this modification. I understand you used a switch to bypass the incoming signal and add an aux cable jack....which wire is it? And where do I make the disconnection?

  • Diagram?

  • Nice! What this done with an FM Modulator?
